Rahul Mishra’s AFEW spring collection is inspired by Indian girls in rural villages, who pursue their dreams by moving to the big cities. Although they embrace Western culture and are adept at the language of Instagram and social media, they remain deeply connected to their traditions. They style modern fashion with traditional Indian pieces and accessories, such as the long scarf known as a dupatta, the bindu or third eye dot painted on their foreheads, and the stacks of delicate gold bangles that adorn their wrists.
“It’s a global approach,” Mishra explained during a showroom appointment in Paris. He envisioned a girl who is “a little bit vulnerable, a little bit brave and curious about the modern world,” yet remains deeply connected to and appreciative of her cultural roots. Mishra noted that local traditions and customs are increasingly absorbed and diluted in a globalized culture, making “everything seem homogeneous” – a perspective that is difficult to dispute. Opt for its ‘easy-to-wear’ collection, which combines international appeal with Indian style references.
The traditional kurta – an elongated T-shaped tunic often paired with fitted trousers – served as the basis for crisp white cotton shirt dresses, decorated with tonal embroidery at the hem. Pleated skirts worn over leggings are inspired by Jaipur’s multi-panel kurtas, reimagined in bold floral prints. Floral motifs and irises were also embroidered with sequins on beautiful sundresses and masculine shirts, using patchwork techniques similar to those used by rural Indian women to personalize their kurtas. “There is power in preserving your culture; wealth is not just about money,” Mishra noted. “It’s about culture, upbringing and family values.”
