Ransomware payments fell by more than a third in 2024, because an increasing number of victims refused to negotiate with hackers.
In A report published WednesdayCrypto Forensics firm chainalysis said that although ransomware -gang -leks sites placed more victims than in previous years in 2024, admit fewer victims to the requirements of the hackers. Chainalysis reported a decrease of 35% in ransom payments, with Ransomware hackers received a total of $ 814 million compared to the record-high amount of 2023 of $ 1.25 billion.
In further evidence of victims who refuse to meet the requirements of attackers, chain analysis said that the amounts by Cyberbendes were 53% higher in the second half of 2024 than the actual payouts – despite an increase in the number of ransomware attacks.
Chainalysis says that the surprise drop – the first observed since 2022 – was also powered by an increase in the action of the law enforcement, including the disruption of the productive ransomware of Lockbit and improved international cooperation.
