Former UFC and WWE star Ronda Rousey apologizes for sharing conspiracy video about Sandy Hook tragedy.
“I can’t tell you how many times I’ve rephrased this apology over the past eleven years. How many times have I convinced myself that it wasn’t the right time or that I would do more damage by giving it up,” Rousey, 37, wrote in a statement shared via X beginning Friday, August 23, in which she addresses a message she posted in January 2013.
“But eleven years ago I made the most regrettable decision of my life. I watched a Sandy Hook conspiracy video and reposted it on Twitter,” she continued, referring to the December 2012 Sandy Hook, Connecticut, elementary school shooting that left 26 people — including 20 children — dead.
“I didn’t even believe it, but I was so shocked by the truth that I longed for an alternative fiction to cling to. I quickly realized my mistake and deleted it, but the damage was already done,” Rousey added, noting that her January 2013 social media post “slipped under the media radar.”
Rousey said she tried to apologize in her recently published memoir: Our strugglebut was discouraged by her publisher. “So I convinced myself that apologizing would only reopen the wound, for no other reason than I was selfishly trying to make myself feel better,” she wrote.
“But honestly, I deserve to be hated, labeled, loathed and worse,” Rousey continued. “I deserve to miss every opportunity, I should have been cancelled, I would have deserved it. I still do that.”
“I apologize that this came 11 years too late, but to those affected by the Sandy Hook massacre, I am sorry from the bottom of my heart and the depths of my soul for the pain I have caused,” Rousey said . “I cannot even imagine the pain you have endured and words cannot describe how deeply remorseful and ashamed I am of myself for contributing to it. I have regretted it every day of my life since then and will continue to do so until the day I die.”
Rousey’s apology comes after a recent one Reddit AMA featuring the former WWE women’s champion on the pro wrestling subreddit r/SquaredCircle was overwhelmingly inundated with questions about her historic tweet.
In July, Rousey revealed that she is expecting her second child with her husband Travis Browne. The couple shares a daughter, La’akea Makalapuaookalanipō, 2.
