Ross Segan named head of FDA's Medical Device Safety Unit

The Food and Drug Administration has tapped former device industry executive and Army veteran Ross Segan to lead the department charged with ensuring the safety of medical devices.

Segan served as Chief Medical Officer at Olympus from 2020 to 2023. Olympus is a leading distributor of endoscopes and receivers FDA Warning Letters alleging that the company failed to adequately address product defects – including cases of endoscope caps falling into patients’ bodies.

“Olympus’ continued failure to meet FDA requirements demonstrates a disturbing disregard for patient safety,” said Jeffrey Shuren, then head of the FDA’s Medical Device Center.
