Moscow formally designated the Taliban as a terrorist organization in 2003.
Moscow:
Russia’s Foreign Ministry said on Friday that a decision to remove the Taliban from a list of terrorist organizations was “taken at the highest level”, state news agency TASS reported on Friday.
The decision must be followed by several legal procedures for it to become a reality, President Vladimir Putin’s Special Representative for Afghanistan Zamir Kabulov said.
Putin said in July that Russia views the Taliban movement in Afghanistan as an ally in the fight against terrorism.
Russia has slowly built ties with the Taliban since seizing power in Afghanistan in August 2021 as US-led forces withdrew after two decades of war, but the movement is still officially banned in Russia.
