After previously shutting down the idea, Sarah Michelle Gellar said she is now open to returning to the “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” universe.
In an appearance on “The Drew Barrymore Show,” Gellar shared that she is considering reprising her role as Buffy in a possible project.
“I always said no, because it’s in its bubble and it’s so perfect,” Gellar said on the talk show. “But look”[And Just Like That…]’and see'[Dexter: Original Sin]’, and realizing that there are ways to do it certainly gets your mind thinking, ‘Well, maybe.’
Gellar added that “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” doesn’t necessarily have to be relegated to a prequel either, and that there could be a wealth of different story options to pursue.
“It could be anything,” Gellar added. “It’s a universe. It makes you realize that we need those heroes in this world, I think, more than ever.”
In 2023, the Golden Globe nominee made himself known to SFX Magazine (via IndieWire) that she wasn’t particularly interested in being involved in a ‘Buffy’ revival.
“I’m very proud of the show we created and I don’t have to be,” Gellar said of his return as the character. “We have completed that.”
Gellar will next be seen in the “Dexter” prequel series “Dexter: Original Sin.” She also starred in “Wolf Pack” in 2023.
“Buffy the Vampire Slayer” ran from 1997 to 2003 and was an adaptation of the 1992 film of the same name. It revolved around Gellar as Buffy, a teenage girl tasked with fighting vampires and other evil creatures.
