Serena Williams has reignited the controversy Harrison Butker‘s controversial opening speech about women being housewives while both attended the 2024 ESPY Awards on Thursday night.
This is what happened… the tennis legend walked onto the stage with her sister, Venusand actress Quinta Brunson celebrating women’s sports during the event at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles.
As they addressed the crowd, Venus said, “So go ahead and enjoy women’s sports like you would enjoy any other sport, because they are sports.”
While Venus was talking, Serena giggled before turning more serious and suddenly firing the Kansas City Chiefs’ kicker… “Except you, Harrison Butker.” We don’t need you.’
Brunson chimed in… “Not at all. As always.’
Benedictine College
Butker was previously photographed arriving at the awards ceremony in a suit and bow tie. It’s unclear what Butker’s reaction was when Serena lashed out at him.
You may remember… Butker made headlines in May when he gave the opening speech at Benedictine College in Kansas, where female graduates are encouraged to become homemakers who raise children. The national response was immediate, especially from professional women in the workplace.
During his speech, Butker – a staunch Catholic – also denounced the LGBTQ community and criticized the president Joe Bidenposition in favor of abortion.
Despite all the negativity, Butker defended his views and was unapologetic about his love for Catholicism and traditional American values.

Meanwhile, ESPYs host Serena gave a funny monologue about the WNBA phenomenon Caitlin Clark at another point in the show.
She joked, “You’re the Larry Bird in that you’re a great player, you have ties to Indiana, and white people really love you.”
It’s safe to say… Serena was on fire last night!
