This isn’t the first time the “Say Yes” singer commented on fans confusing her with the actress of the same name.
After actress Williams received an Emmy in 2019 for her role as Gwen Verdon in Fosse/Verdonsinger Williams said she received multiple responses from confused fans.
“How come when y’all tag someone and congratulate them, y’all see that I’m black?” the singer said via an Instagram Live. “If you go to my profile, search for ‘Michelle Williams,’ I’m black. OK? I am mixed with nothing; I am not mixed with Persian, Russian, I am black.
During her Emmy speech, actress Williams spoke about equal pay in the industry, which singer Williams said was criticized online.
“I’m trying to figure out, ‘Why the hell am I getting cursed out in my comments on Michelle Williams’ speech?’ which I thought was her truth. I loved it,” she said. “I thought she was factual – but yeah, I told this woman on my Instagram a few minutes ago that I thought: “I’m so sorry my namesake upset you, but can’t you see I’m black?”
The “Lose My Breath” singer made it clear that she was supportive The Fabelmans actress’s speech.
‘She was beautiful. She was brilliant. Baby, she played Gwen Verdon to perfection. She was amazing,” she said. “Now do it right and stop calling me names.”
The Venom actress has also previously commented on their name mix-ups. In one interview with Huffpost published in 2018, the actress commented on the fact that Google search would show her photo when someone searched for “destiny’s child five members.”
“It brings me one step closer Beyonceso I’m pretty good with it,” the actress said at the time. ‘Now I have an icebreaker if I ever meet Beyoncé. I’ll talk to her about the old days of Destiny’s Child. So thank you, because I will obviously keep my mouth shut if that ever happens, and now I know exactly what to say.
