The economist has a very interesting set of articles about recent trends in Western culture. The first is right Aging shamefulAnd documents a large increase in promiscuous sex and drug use in the baby boom generation. (Yes, that’s my generation.) The second article Notification a dramatic death in this kind of behavior among the younger generation:
The trend for youthful austerity applies to a large part of the rich world. In 2024, illegal drug use among adolescents fell at historic lows in America, published by the University of Michigan according to a national survey on December 17. Drinking fell too. The researchers discovered that even the use of cannabis is now rapidly decreasing among young people, despite the fact that weed has been made legal in almost half of the states in the past decade. European surveys also show through drops in drugs and alcohol consumption.
Why does a youthful surplus passing? There is no explanation whatsoever. Children are being monitored more closely than in the past, and a larger proportion of young adults come from more abstemious immigrant cultures. Age idle Checks at Bars are more common; Netflix and Fortnite are cheaper than Cider; And dating apps are better than finding love on the sticky floors of a place called “Snobs”. The trend is clear and probably seems to last. It is their parents who are now the problem.
If you live long enough, you will see all kinds of surprising trends, and this is certainly one that I could never have imagined. I always thought of wild behavior as a province of the young people, while the elderly in their lifestyle were often more conservative.
I am not in favor of drug ban, but if we have to have limitations on drug use, we may have to replace the minimum age for smoking pots by a maximum age.
Of course I joke, but these articles increase a serious point. In recent decades, many thousands of people have been imprisoned for selling marijuana. The drug fighters told us that we had to do this, despite the enormous costs ruined in both issued dollars and life, because legal marijuana would be abused by young people who miss the maturity to make sensible decisions. It now seems that the entire drug war was based on a misconception. Legalizing marijuana is associated with a large one death In pot use among young people. So much human misery, all caused by a misconception.
