Smeg’s 10-in-1 multifunctional oven goes on sale today.
Priced at £849.95 you can buy it from Smeg’s website, at Smeg’s flagship store in London, and it will be available from other retailers soon. It hasn’t launched in the US yet.
At this price, this isn’t the kind of device you’d buy on a whim. But for some people it will be a perfect, problem-solving purchase. Smeg considers potential buyers as people who live alone, renters and people with a compact kitchen. If that’s you, then here’s why you might want to invest.
Air fryer ovens are transformative: they make cooking easier and cheaper. No more fiddling with the incomprehensible multi-function buttons of your built-in oven to set an alarm, or heating up a giant cave just to cook some fish sticks.
Additionally, an oven doesn’t necessarily have the range to perform all the cooking functions of a countertop appliance, including frying, steaming and grilling.
But this type of countertop stove will be a dominant presence in your kitchen and at best they will look functional.
Smeg’s 1950s retro line includes some of the most beautiful appliances and equipment available. We’ve reviewed the espresso machine, the espresso machine, the coffee grinder, the blender and more – and each appliance is well-made, useful and will be an aesthetic addition to your kitchen.
The Smeg countertop oven is no different, with a curved construction and high-gloss finish. It will be available in cream and black at launch, but we expect more color options to follow.
Since it’s a 10-in-1 device, you might even be able to reduce the clutter on your countertop if you buy one.
Cooking functions:
- Air frying
- Baking
- Convection (it’s not clear how this setting will differ from air fry mode, which is also convection cooking)
- Grilling and gratinating
- Cooking with bottom heat (for pizza and pastry tins)
- Hot
- Defrost
- Three steam settings: pure, convection (for roasts) and grill
It has a huge cooking capacity of 30 liters, making it larger than any of our recommended air fryer ovens.
But the large capacity also has its disadvantages. To get started, you need a counter space that can accommodate the dimensions of 50 x 50 x 40 cm.
Secondly, the appliance will not be as cheap to run as a smaller air fryer, and because there is more internal space to heat up, the appliance is unlikely to cook as quickly. But it will be faster and more budget-friendly to use than a full-size integral oven.
The Smeg countertop oven has 33 built-in recipes, for meat, fish and vegetable dishes, but also for pastries and pizza. You enter the weight of your cooked food and the oven intelligently adjusts the cooking time and temperature for perfect results. More recipes are available via the My Smeg Assistant digital platform, which you can access with a QR code upon purchase.
You can buy the 10-in-1 multifunction oven from Smeg from today for €849.95. It comes with an enamelled hob, a perforated baking tray and a grill.
