SNL Music Documentary Directed by Questlove Coming to NBC

A documentary about the music performances on “Saturday Night Live” is coming to NBC, directed by Oscar winner Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson and Emmy winner Oz Rodriguez.

Titled “Ladies & Gentlemen… 50 Years of SNL Music,” the three-hour special will premiere on the network on January 27 at 8 p.m. and stream on Peacock the following day.

The latest project celebrating five decades of ‘SNL’ will feature “untold stories behind the culture-defining, groundbreaking and news-making musical performances, skits and cameos of the past 50 years,” according to the logline.

The documentary will also feature more than 50 interviews, including Bad Bunny, DJ Breakout, Elvis Costello, Miley Cyrus, Billie Eilish and Finneas, Dave Grohl, Debbie Harry & Chris Stein, Mick Jagger, Dua Lipa, Darryl DMC McDaniels, Tom Morello, Kacey Musgraves, Olivia Rodrigo, MC Sha-Rack, Paul Simon, Chris Stapleton, Justin Timberlake, Lee Ving and Jack White.

Also interviewed are “SNL” creator Lorne Michaels and cast and creatives past and present, including Fred Armisen, Conan O’Brien, Eli Brueggemann, Jane Curtin, Jimmy Fallon, Al Franken, Josiah Gluck, Bill Hader, Steve Higgins, Marci Klein , Melanie Malone, Tom Malone, Mary Ellen Matthews, Eddie Murphy, Ego Nwodim, Liz Patrick, Leon Pendarvis, Lenny Pickett, Joe Piscopo, Andy Samberg, Brian Siedlecki, Akiva Schaffer, Paul Shaffer, Sarah Sherman, Howard Shore, Robert Smigel, Jorma Taccone, Kenan Thompson, Maya Rudolph, Hal Willner and Bowen Yang.

“Everyone knows the most famous ‘SNL’ performances, whether it’s Elvis Costello, Prince or the Beastie Boys, but they are the tip of a huge iceberg,” Questlove said in a statement. “The process of going back through the incredible archive footage was like being in a time machine, DeLorean or something else. I’m so happy that I went on this journey and that I can now share it with everyone.”

“Ladies & Gentlemen… 50 Years of SNL Music” is executive produced by Michaels, Questlove, Zarah Zohlman, Erin David, Dave Sirulnick, Jon Kamen, Meredith Bennett, Alexander H. Browne, Shawn Gee and Tariq Trotter. Rodriguez serves as producer. The special is produced by Two One Five Entertainment, RadicalMedia and Broadway Video.

The 50th anniversary programming of “Saturday Night Live” will conclude with a four-part docuseries titled “SNL50: Beyond Saturday Night,” debuting Jan. 16, and a live primetime special on Feb. 16.
