Standing has become popular among people looking to offset the damage of a sedentary lifestyle, often caused by long days spent in front of the computer, television or behind the wheel. Standing desks have become a popular option among office workers, and in other industries, such as retail, workers may choose to stand instead of sit.

However, their efforts may not yield the intended results. New research from the University of Sydney has shown that standing more than sitting does not improve long-term cardiovascular health (coronary heart disease, stroke and heart failure), and increases the risk of circulatory problems associated with standing, such as varicose veins , can enlarge. veins and deep vein thrombosis.

The study, published in the International Journal of Epidemiology also found that sitting for more than 10 hours per day increases both the risk of cardiovascular disease and the risk of orthostatic incidence, reinforcing the need for greater physical activity throughout the day. The research also shows that more standing is not associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease.

Lead author from the Faculty of Medicine and Health and deputy director of the Mackenzie Wearables Research Hub at the Charles Perkins Center, Dr. Matthew Ahmadi, said there are other ways for people with sedentary lifestyles to improve their cardiovascular health.

“The key takeaway is that standing for too long will not compensate for an otherwise sedentary lifestyle and may be risky in terms of circulatory health for some people. We found that standing more does not improve cardiovascular health in the long term and increases the risk of circulatory failure.” problems,” said Dr. Ahmadi.

Although the researchers found that no health benefits were gained from standing more, they cautioned against sitting for long periods of time, and recommended that people who are regularly sedentary or need to stand for long periods of time get regular exercise throughout the day.

“For people who regularly sit for long periods of time, occasional exercise throughout the day may be sufficient. Structured exercise may be a better way to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease,” says Professor Emmanuel Stamatakis, director of Mackenzie Wearables Research Hub. .

“Take regular breaks, walk around, go to walking meetings, use the stairs, take regular breaks if you’re driving long distances, or use that lunch hour to get away from your desk and get some exercise. In Australia we’re now coming in the warmer months, so the weather is perfect for sun-safe exercises that will help you get moving,” he said.

Professor Stamatakis and Dr. Ahmadi research published earlier this year found that about six minutes of vigorous exercise or 30 minutes of moderate to vigorous exercise per day could help lower the risk of heart disease, even in people who were highly sedentary for more than 11 hours per day.

The study was conducted using data on heart disease and cardiovascular disease collected over a period of seven to eight years from 83,013 British adults who were free of heart disease at baseline, as measured using research-grade wearables, similar to a smartwatch.
