The Democratic National Convention takes place this week at the United Center in Chicago. The convention runs until Thursday and will bring together thousands of delegates and alternates to adopt a party platform for the 2024 presidential election; Vice President Kamala Harris and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz will also formally accept the party’s nominations. Over four days, the DNC will feature several speakers, and Monday’s kickoff event included words from President Joe Biden and First Lady Dr. Jill Biden.
While the four-day convention will focus on stoking voters’ enthusiasm for Harris and Walz — and tackling key issues the Democratic Party wants to focus on on the campaign trail — the DNC will also be packed with strategic fashion choices. Politicians have long used personal style to convey campaign and policy messages. The DNC only further proves the thoughtful, strategic approach to dressing.
Dr. Jill Biden opted for a lilac double-breasted blazer from Ralph Lauren, paired with white trousers. The First Lady has often shown her support for American designers, most notably in her Ralph Lauren clothing at the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics last month. Showcasing American talent through her wardrobe is a common display of patriotism from the first lady, who has also worn designs from Sergio Hudson, Christian Siriano, Markarian and more during her term.
On the first day of the DNC, Minnesota Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan spoke wearing a printed blazer and dress by Jamie Okuma, a leading contemporary Indigenous designer and artist. In showing her support for Okuma, Flanagan — Ojibwe — also recognized indigenous citizens, who are often key voters in the swing state during election years.
