Karen Lees goes back to court for round two – a judge just greenlighted a second murder trial following the death of her boyfriend, John O’Keefe …weeks after it was declared a mistrial following a hung jury.
Judge from Massachusetts Beverly Cannon has scheduled Read’s retrial for January 27, 2025 … dropping the news Monday in front of both the prosecutor and defense attorneys.
The date has not yet been determined because Read’s lawyer David YannettiJudge Cannone told Judge Cannone that he has another trial scheduled just before then.
But Read’s retrial may not even happen… Cannone said she will hear arguments on a defense motion to dismiss the case on Aug. 9, and she expects hearings from both sides before she makes her ruling.
The move comes after Read’s lawyer… Alan Jacksonargued earlier this month that a new trial would create double jeopardy.
He argued in the legal papers that the judge should have acquitted Read – accused of drunkenly running over Jackson in ’22 – of both the murder charge and the charge of leaving the scene causing injury and death… because the jury unanimously found her “not guilty” on those accusations.

But, as we reported… there was no mention of the jury’s unanimity when the judge declared a mistrial.
It was revealed that the jury was only hung on the vehicular manslaughter charge, with a 9-3 vote leaning toward guilt. But for now, it appears a new jury will have a chance to reach a verdict.
