The number of patients in the Cyclospora outbreak is increasing; other outbreaks remain stable

The number of confirmed patients in an outbreak of infections with the Cyclospora parasite continues to rise, with 60 people now ill. A source of the parasites has not yet been found.

The Food and Drug Administration first reported the outbreak on August 7 and the number of patients has steadily increased.

The agency has begun tracking, sample testing and on-site inspections, but has not reported which foods are being traced or tested. The FDA also has not revealed which location is being inspected.

In another Cyclospora outbreak, the number of patients remains at 46. The FDA first reported the outbreak on July 31. The agency has begun product tracking, testing and on-site inspections, but has not reported details of these activities.

In other outbreak news, the number of cases of an E. coli O157:H7 outbreak linked to a yet unidentified food stands at 27. The FDA first published the outbreak on August 28. For a Salmonella Typhimurium outbreak, the number of patients is 90 people infected with the outbreak strain.
