This Caribbean Island Broke Another Record with Over 11 Million Tourists in 2024

The Caribbean has seen tremendous growth in tourism since the pandemic, with some countries breaking records year after year. The Dominican Republic has reached an important milestone in its tourism sector and welcomes it 11 million visitors in 2024. This record surpasses last year’s figure of 10 million, underscoring the country’s growing appeal as a leading travel destination.

Tourism Minister David Collado personally greeted the 11 millionth visitor, Bruce Pirt from Canada, at Punta Cana International Airportemphasizing the importance of this achievement. The total number of visitors includes both overnight tourists and cruise passengers, with the majority being overnight arrivals.

This growth is not only a testament to the country’s diverse appeal, but also reflects its economic resilience. The tourism sector has made a significant contribution to the Dominican Republic’s GDP, with revenue reaching $9.7 billion in 2023, an increase of 16% compared to 2022.

The increase in visitor numbers can be attributed to several factors, including strategic marketing efforts, improved infrastructure and a focus on safety and hospitality. In particular, there has been an increase in arrivals from traditional markets such as the United States and Canada, as well as from European countries such as Spain and Germany.

Looking ahead, the Dominican government has set an ambitious goal of attracting 14 million visitors annually by the end of 2028. This goal is in line with ongoing efforts to diversify tourism offerings and improve the overall visitor experience.

In related developments, the recent ones Open Skies Agreement between the United States and the Dominican Republic aims to eliminate government restrictions on flight routes, capacity, frequency and prices for commercial air services. This pro-consumer agreement is expected to provide more flight options, lower fares, more travel and a boost to economic growth.

As the Dominican Republic continues to break tourism records, it is cementing its position as a leading destination in the Caribbean, offering a rich blend of culture, natural beauty and hospitality to travelers around the world
