President Trump plans to nominate Susan Monarez as director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, according to a position on his social media platform.
Monarez is not a doctor, but holds a Ph.D. In microbiology and immunology. She has 20 years of experience in jobs in the government. She was deputy director of the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health, a research agency for research financing that describes itself as a supportive “transformative biomedical and health break”.
While with the federal government, Monarez worked at the Department of Homeland Security and the Office of Science and Technology policy of the White House.
“Dr. Monarez brings decades of experience in defending innovation, transparency and strong public health systems,” Trump said in a position on his social social site.
“As an incredible mother and dedicated civil servant, Dr. Monarez understands the importance of protecting our children, our communities and our future. Americans have lost confidence in the CDC because of political prejudice and disastrous mismanagement.”
If confirmed by the Senate, Monarez will lead the agency based in Atlanta with a budget of $ 17.3 billion. It follows domestic and foreign threats for public health, including investigating outbreaks of diseases transferred by food and research into pathogens transferred by food. Much of the budget of the CDC will help finance local and national public health and prevention activities.
Monarez would immediately report to health and secretary of Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
