Donald Trump emphasized the “power” of the presidency on Friday when he was asked in a discussion about transgender children what he might do if he returns to the Oval Office.
“Well, you can do anything,” the GOP nominee said at an event in Washington, D.C., for the far-right Moms for Liberty group.
“[The] The president has so much power, he does. It has so much power.”
His response was prompted by Moms for Liberty co-founder Tiffany Justice, who sought Trump’s response to what she described as an “explosion” in the number of trans children.
His comments come after the Supreme Court ruled last month that presidents have broad rights immunity of criminal prosecution for official acts.
The campaign of Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris shared an excerpt of his comments on social media. “Trump is fantasizing about his Project 2025 plan to take total control of Americans’ lives,” her campaign wrote, referring to the Heritage Foundation-led policy blueprint for a new Republican administration.
The Republican candidate has used dictatorial talk on the campaign trail over the past year.
Trump, who has boasted about his relationship with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and whose rhetoric has been as well compared to that of Adolf Hitlertold Fox News’ Sean Hannity in 2023 that he planned to not act like a “dictator” until the first day of a second term in the White House.
The former president said in an interview earlier this week: defended his ‘dictator’ comment when criticizing the ‘dishonest’ media.
At various times in the past, he has also attempted a coup to remain in the White House. seemed to secure a three-term presidencycalled for the “termination” of articles of the Constitution and told a crowd of Christians that they “don’t have to vote anymore” after November.
