Trump has a 'blatant disregard' for public health

WASHINGTON — Former President Trump and his campaign surrogates have sparked a new round of alarm in recent days about how they could undermine public health in the future and how Robert F. Kennedy Jr. in particular could be doing away with it. ‘could get out of hand with medication’.

Now a Kennedy family member, who is also a longtime healthcare attorney and disability rights advocate, is joining the chorus of concerns.

“I am deeply concerned about President Trump’s blatant disregard for public health and safety,” Ted Kennedy Jr., an attorney at Epstein Becker Green, and a cousin of RFK Jr., told STAT. “We cannot put anyone in charge of healthcare who does not understand how doctors and scientists develop best practices and keep us safe, and who has no medical background and knowledge of how healthcare is organized, delivered and paid for. ”

RFK Jr., a longtime vaccine skeptic, boasted that Trump has done that promised him “control over public health authorities.” The former Democrat and independent presidential candidate said he would help shape priorities for agencies including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Food and Drug Administration.

On Thursday night, Trump expanded that mandate further: “He’s going to work on health, and women’s health, and all these different reasons – because we’re not really a prosperous or healthy country,” he told rallygoers.

Ted Kennedy Jr. is the son of the late Ted Kennedy, who served in the Senate for 47 years and during his time in office championed consumer protections, public health, mental health equity and universal health care. Kennedy Jr. has served in the Connecticut Senate and as president of the American Association of People with Disabilities.

He wrote an editorial this week support from Vice President Harris for president and warning that “under President Trump, the rights of people with disabilities have faced unprecedented threats.”

Members of RFK Jr.’s family — some of whom spoke out against his previous presidential campaign and denounced his support of Trump — have said less about his “Make America Healthy Again” movement.

“He knows where I stand,” Kennedy Jr. said. to STAT about RFK Jr. health and vaccine safety. No conversation was necessary.”

Asked for comment, the Trump campaign did not immediately respond.

RFK Jr.’s MAHA proposals include an overhaul of food and nutrition policy, research into environmental factors that contribute to chronic disease, and a push to “refocus federal health agencies on chronic disease and rid them of the influence of Big Pharma.” according to its website.

While food policy reforms have received some bipartisan support, RFK Jr.’s past and recent positions have. over the pharmaceutical industry, vaccine safety and public health institutions have fueled panic among Democrats, and even some former Trump officials. Biopharmaceutical companies are on alert and public health officials have urged caution.

But others currently involved in the campaign have indicated that RFK Jr.’s momentum. only grows. Trump’s transition co-chair, Howard Lutnick, this week told CNN that RFK Jr. could oversee efforts to reduce the number of vaccines on the recommended U.S. schedule and revisit discussions about the liability of pharmaceutical companies developing the vaccines. Lutnick, CEO of Wall Street firm Cantor Fitzgerald, said in his comments that his views were shaped by a two-and-a-half-hour conversation with RFK Jr. debunked theory about the rise of autism and vaccines.

On Friday, Lutnick posted further the social media site that he trusts his doctors and has vaccinated his children, but “not everyone trusts such advice or the FDA,” and “We would do everyone a service if the administration would respect Bobby Kennedy’s request to make the complete data available.”

Ted Kennedy Jr. said he thinks Trump, if elected, would “find it difficult to attract serious health care policy makers and renowned physicians to serve in his administration.”

“The anti-vaccine rhetoric has been thoroughly debunked by the scientific community. That kind of rhetoric is dangerous to the public health and safety of Americans,” he said.
