UNIVERSITY of the East (UE) will shoot for the final semifinal against University of the Philippines (UP) on Wednesday in the penultimate date of the UAAP Season 87 men’s basketball at the Filoil EcoOil Center in San Juan.
Game time is at 5:30 p.m., with the Warriors looking to break a 15-year drought and avoid complications for the last Final Four ticket, while the Adamson Soaring Falcons look out from fifth spot.
The slipping UE team with four consecutive losses has a score of 6-7 and could reach the magic number of seven wins with a victory against UP (10-3), already in the Final Four and assured of a lead of twice beat as the No. 2 seed.
A Warriors victory would take the Falcons (5-8) out of contention regardless of the outcome of their final game on Saturday against Ateneo (4-9), which also ran, and send them to the Finals for the first time in the era Four push. by school legend Paul Lee in 2009.
Otherwise, UE could be in a play-off with Adamson to complete the picture and UP stands in the way of not giving anything away but preparing for a Final Four showdown against the much-improved Santo Tomas.
Santo Tomas avoided any complications this weekend by finishing with a 7-7 victory after a 75-49 victory over Adamson, while UE suffered a costly loss to Ateneo de Manila University, 71-67, and missed out on an outright ticket.
Good thing for coach Jack Santiago’s Warriors, they’ll welcome back prized backup Precious Momowei after serving a one-game suspension following two unsportsmanlike fouls and an ejection in a 76-67 loss to Santo Tomas. — John Bryan Ulanday
