U.S. National Team head coach Mauricio Pochettino has selected a group composed primarily of MLS players for the annual camp in January, including nearly a dozen players who could make their international debuts in a pivotal year for the team.
While Charlotte FC’s Tim Ream and Nashville SC’s Walker Zimmerman are among the veteran players on the roster, only six of the 24 players in camp have double-figure scoring. Six members of the U-23 team that reached the quarterfinals of last summer’s Olympics made the roster, including goalkeeper Patrick Schulte and 2024 MLS Cup finalist John Tolkin. Schulte’s name stands out among the pack as the USMNT’s starting position is a point of focus as Pochettino takes charge, even though previous first-choice Matt Turner has retained the role in the early months of the new coach’s tenure .
Like his predecessors, Pochettino will use the January camp as an opportunity to work with American talent performing well in the MLS, many of whom are still in their off-season and available to participate in a camp outside of FIFA windows falls. The group includes Brian White of the Vancouver Whitecaps, who has one cap for the national team and was the highest-scoring American in MLS last season with 16 goals. In addition, 10 players could earn their first cap by the end of the month, a list that includes Miami-born forward Matko Miljevic, who is eligible to represent the US, Argentina, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia.
The USMNT’s camp begins Tuesday in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and lasts two weeks, ending with a match at Chase Stadium against Venezuela on January 18 and a match against Costa Rica on January 22 at Inter&Co Stadium in Orlando.
