No triple espresso

The roster includes fifteen players who were part of the 2024 Olympic squad, but without forwards Trinity Rodman, Mallory Swanson and Sophia Smith. The offensive line dubbed “triple espresso” was responsible for ten of the USWNT’s twelve Olympic goals. Smith and Swanson will begin their offseason recoveries from lingering injuries, while Rodman will play with her club team, Washington Spirit, in the NWSL Championship on Saturday, November 23.

“Let me be clear: none of these players ever want to miss a match because they are playing for their country. So I want to be very clear about that… I want to make sure that these players are prepared for a long time to come. And if “You’re at the end of a season and you’re playing a lot, your body is tired, your mind is tired, then sometimes it can become risky,” Hayes told the media about the choice to rest the attack. trio.

Their absence means there will be even more opportunities to see rotations along different lines in the coming matches. Lower capped players earn extra minutes, and young players can showcase their skills in attack.

Another young selection with newer names

The youngest addition to the selection is Lily Yohannes and the 17-year-old currently plays for club AFC Ajax. Yohannes, who made her debut in June, is one of several players to earn their first senior cap under Hayes, with seven players recently earning their first ever USWNT cap in a single international window. The midfielder had options to represent the United States or the Netherlands prior to her international career.

“It is extremely important to us to have the commitment of Lily Yohannes, and I am so grateful to everyone involved. From Lily to her father and the federation. Everyone shows how important it is: you have to get the plan right when someone like Lily is faced with such an interesting choice, but she has been very clear with me this week. I had a really good conversation with her,” Hayes said of Yohannes representing USWNT

‘May was so much fun [camp] for her to have thought about it ever since, and now she really wants to move forward with her international career. She knows she has to work hard because the playing pool is so strong, but I think she is an exceptional talent, and I am very happy that in the coming years we can develop a very young Lily Yohannes to prepare her for a future with the national team.”

For the winter series in Europe, Hayes plans to maintain some of the same personnel rotation efforts. Players are tested from their favorite positions and evaluated in various duos and trios.
Phallon Tullis-Joyce (Manchester United) and Ally Sentnor (Utah Royals FC) are two additional players who can earn their first minutes for the senior national team.
