There’s officially a new companion in the Whoniverse.
The first teaser for the second season of Disney+ and BBC’s “Doctor Who” introduces Varada Sethu as Belinda Chandra, who assertively tells Ncuti Gatwa’s doctor, “You have to take me home!” The clip appears to tease some sort of apocalyptic invasion, with spaceships and robots roaming around as Gatwa exclaims, “What the hell is this?!” Gibson’s Ruby Sunday, Gatwa’s companion from season 1, also appears – dispelling good rumors that she wouldn’t return for a new chapter.
The official synopsis for the season, which premieres next year, reads: “The Doctor meets Belinda Chandra and begins an epic quest to get her back to Earth. But a mysterious force prevents their return and the time-traveling TARDIS team must face greater dangers, greater enemies and greater horrors than ever before.”
The first look premiered on Wednesday following the debut of this year’s ‘Doctor Who’ Christmas special. In the episode, titled “Joy to the World,” “Bridgerton” star Nicola Coughlan teams up with the Doctor for a dinosaur-themed adventure.
Coughlan plays new character Joy, who checks into a London hotel and accidentally “opens a secret door to the Time Hotel – and discovers danger, dinosaurs and the Doctor,” reads the episode synopsis. “But a deadly plan is unfolding across the Earth, just in time for Christmas. What’s going on in Joy’s hotel room? An old enemy of the Doctor lurks in the wings and all of human history is at stake. Can the Doctor save Christmas everywhere and in one go?
Russell T Davies serves as showrunner and executive producer for ‘Doctor Who’. Other executive producers include Joel Collins, Phil Collinson, Julie Gardner and Jane Tranter. The show is produced by Bad Wolf, with BBC Studios for Disney Branded Television and BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
