Sunday sees West Ham United and Manchester United go head-to-head in the Premier League, with Julen Lopetegui and Erik ten Hag both needing a win at the London Stadium. The Hammers were beaten 4-1 by Tottenham Hotspur last week, while the Red Devils beat Brentford 2-1 before drawing 1-1 with Jose Mourinho’s Fenerbahce in midweek. West Ham have scored 11 goals to United’s seven, but have not recorded a clean sheet in 13 home games in the Premier League, while the visitors to Ten Hag are now unbeaten in five away games, four of which have been draws.
United are aiming for four consecutive EPL clean sheets on the road for the first time since 2020, while Lopetegui’s hosts look to end a run of seven matches without a shutout in all competitions. A lead against Spurs turned into a defeat and a red card for Mohammed Kudus, but West Ham did win 2-0 against United in their final home game of 2023 under David Moyes, which was their second home win in a row against the Red Devils.
Ten Hag remained calm as Mourinho broke in the midweek Europa League draw with Christian Eriksen on target for United, who relied heavily on Andre Onana in front of goal. Before that, Ethan Pinnock gave Brentford the lead at Old Trafford while Matthijs de Ligt was off the pitch for treatment, but Alejandro Garnacho and Rasmus Hojlund saved the day for Ten Hag.

Season so far
Lopetegui’s men sit 15th in the Premier League standings after last weekend’s heavy defeat, although a win of any kind would lift the Irons above United on goal difference. The win over Brentford is the only Red Devils success that Ten Hag’s men can boast from their last seven matches, which sees them sit 12th in the EPL table, leaving them six points behind the top four .
Team news
Westham: Kudus will begin his three-match suspension following his dismissal against Spurs and will miss the matches against Nottingham Forest and Everton. West Ham have played five EPL matches without the Ghana international and are unbeaten in all of them. Crysencio Summerville should replace Kudus, while Niclas Fullkrug is also expected to miss. Edson Alvarez could come into contention to replace Guido Rodriguez in midfield.
Possible West Ham XI: areola; Wan-Bissaka, Mavropanos, Kilman, Emerson; Alvarez; Bowen, Paqueta, Soucek, Summerville; Antonio.
United: Captain Bruno Fernandes is back from suspension and ready to play after being replaced by Noussair Mazraoui in midweek. Ten Hag will also hope that Jonny Evans returns while Antony is now in doubt with a knock. Kobbie Mainoo, Leny Yoro, Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw, Tyrell Malacia and Mason Mount have already been ruled out.
Possible United XI: Onana; Mazraoui, De Ligt, Evans, Martinez; Eriksen, Casemiro; Rashford, Fernandes, Garnacho; Hojlund.
Prediction
This one feels like United should be able to pull out a narrow win over West Ham given the high stakes of the match. Given the Red Devils’ away form and the Hammers’ struggle to keep things tight at home, it feels like one goal should probably be enough. Choose: Westham 0, United 1.
