The match between Valencia and Real Madrid followed massive flooding in Spain. In total, more than 200 people have died in the floods that hit Valencia and surrounding areas, with more rain expected to add to the chaos.
On Thursday, the Spanish Football Federation announced that all matches in the Valencia region will be postponed to a later date.
“In addition to the postponement, Spanish football has wanted to show its solidarity with those affected, especially with the relatives of those who died in this natural disaster; and for this reason, all matches played yesterday in competitions organized by the RFEF were preceded by respectful minutes Silence”, RFEF said in a statement. “This circumstance will repeat itself this weekend.”
Real Madrid also donated €1 million to help with the flood relief efforts. Villarreal’s match against Rayo Vallecano and Levante’s match against Malaga were also postponed. La Liga clubs also pledged to raise money for the Red Cross to support relief efforts.
After the disappointment in El Clasico, the loss against Barcelona, Real Madrid will be given extra time to prepare for Tuesday’s Champions League match against Milan. Valencia’s next match is an away match in the Copa del Rey against Parala Esucela on Wednesday, while Real Madrid will be back in action in Spain on November 9 as they host Osasuna.
