The Copa America has reached the quarter-finals and unlike the European Championship, teams will not play extra time in the knockout round. Instead, matches tied after 90 minutes and stoppage time will go straight to penalties, at least until the final of the tournament. In many tournaments’ knockout matches, teams play two 15-minute periods if the match is tied after 90 minutes, and only then go to penalties if the match is still tied, but the Copa America does not do that.
This is not a new arrangement for the Copa America, but the final on July 14 will include extra time if the level is equal. Argentina, Ecuador, Venezuela, Canada, Uruguay, Brazil, Colombia and Panama are the teams that still have a chance to win the Copa America trophy, while teams such as Mexico and the United States dropped out of the tournament during the group stage.
