Cinnamon sold in New York is being recalled after testing shows elevated lead levels

American Spices, LLC. of Ozone Park, NY, is recalling Spice Class brand Ground Cinnamon because it may be potentially contaminated with elevated lead levels.

The recall was the result of an analysis conducted by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets (NYSAGM), which found that the product contained elevated levels of lead. The company has halted production and distribution of the product as the FDA and the company continue their investigation into the cause of the problem.

Short-term exposure to very low levels of lead may not cause any symptoms. Elevated blood lead levels may be the only clear sign of lead exposure. Additional signs and symptoms of lead exposure are likely to include acute exposure to higher levels of lead or chronic exposure to lead.

Although lead can affect almost any body system, its effects depend on the amount and duration of lead exposure and age/body weight. If a child is exposed to enough lead for an extended period of time, permanent damage to the central nervous system can occur. This can lead to learning disabilities, developmental disabilities, and other long-term health problems. In adults, chronic lead exposure is associated with renal dysfunction, hypertension and neurocognitive effects.

The Spice Class brand Ground Cinnamon was distributed to retailers in the New York City area between December 1, 2023 and May 15, 2024.

Recalled product:

SPICE CLASS – Ground cinnamon

  • Packaged in 7 oz and 11 oz PET jars
  • Expiry date: 12/2026.

At the time this recall was issued, no illnesses have been reported to date.

Consumers should immediately discontinue use of the product and are urged to return the product to the place of purchase for a full refund.
