John Mulaney took the “Saturday Night Live” 50-year anniversary special on a five-decades trip through the ups and downs of the home base in New York City in New York City. Johanssen and Paul Rudd sang “suddenly ebikes” to the tune “suddenly seymour” from “Little Shop of Horrors”, while Kenan Thompson and Maya Rudolph “One Day More” sang together with Nick Jonas and Taran Killam dressed as a pizza rat.
The sketch started with Mulaney in 1975 and advised Davidson and Spade: “Have you moved to New York now? It is 1975 New York dies. It is a bankrupt Hellengat. “Spade is ready to go, but Davison wants to stay.” We are poets and dreamers, and New York is where we belong. So a hot dog with heroin, please! “
Mulaney then asks Hot Dog (played by Adam Driver) and Heroin (Maya Rudolph) to describe what New York is about. They sing on the melody of “Fame”: “Shame! You will be shot in a taxi! You will be stabbed in the train!”
From there, Mulaney takes the duo to New York to the 1980s. “We are on a powerful lunch on Wall Street. Is New York good now, they ask. ‘If you are white, yes! It is all thanks to the tree on the stock market and a new diet that sweeps the city. “That is when Lane, on the melody of ‘Hakuna Matata’, ‘Cocaine and what Vodka looks like, what a wonderful phase. Cocaine and some vodka. It’s how the Mets win their games!”
“I bet Disney will be psyched!” Mulaney says about the reworked texts.
New York became more expensive by the nineties. “If we enter the 90s, Times Square will be transformed from pimps and pornographers into something even dirtier: cartoon mascots,” Mulaney notes. “But the old guard will not go still.”
