Football player Enzo Fernandez has issued a mea culpa for singing racist and homophobic chants with his Argentina teammates after their Copa América victory last weekend… writing in a statement “there is absolutely no excuse” for this behavior.
The midfielder, who plays for Chelsea when he is not logging minutes with the Argentina national team, filmed himself and others on a bus uttering crass words about France after beating Miami 1-0 on Sunday.

In the footage, which Fernández posted on his Instagram page, you can see the footballer and several others with big grins on their faces as they uttered hateful words.
Naturally, the clip immediately received a lot of reactions… and on Tuesday evening Fernández said he regretted his actions.
“I would like to sincerely apologize for a video posted on my Instagram channel during the national team celebration,” he said. “The song contains highly offensive language and there is absolutely no excuse for these words.”
The chants became popular in 2022, when some Argentine fans sent them to the French after the sides’ clash in the World Cup final.
France defender Wesley Fofana, who actually plays with Fernández at Chelsea, slammed him for the video, calling it “unchecked racism.” One of Fernández’s other teammates, France forward Christopher Nkunkualso reprimanded Fernandez and the Argentines for the celebration.
As for Chelsea, the company said in a statement Wednesday morning, it condemns Fernandez’s behavior… and has initiated “an internal disciplinary procedure.”
The French Football Federation announced on Tuesday that it would also file a legal complaint.
