Country music star Billy Ray Cyrus had a rough night on stage when he performed at the Liberty Ball celebrating President Donald Trump’s inauguration on Monday night.
Cyrus appeared to be plagued by a mix of technical issues and a gravelly voice while performing without a band.
The performance started with the full-length video for Lil Nas
As the video ended, he strummed his guitar for more of the song and whistled. He also attempted an a cappella version of the song, calling on the audience to clap and sing along.
“If you encourage me, I’ll keep going,” he said. “They told me to kill as much time as possible.”
“Is anyone awake?” he shouted to the technical team. ‘Where is everyone? Is there anyone behind there? Can someone turn my guitar back on?
Someone came out, but he couldn’t get the guitar to work.
Cyrus noted that Carrie Underwood also had technical difficulties during the inauguration ceremony earlier in the day and had to perform an a cappella version of “America The Beautiful” when the orchestral track cut out.
“Wasn’t Carrie Underwood fantastic?” he said. “They also had technical problems. And when you have technical problems in life, you just have to keep going. Or as President Trump would say, ‘You gotta fight!’”

Inspired by Underwood, Cyrus launched into an a cappella verse of his 1992 hit, “Achy Breaky Heart.”
