The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau Sent termination reports to a few dozen employees at the end of Tuesday, according to people with knowledge of the situation.
The affected staff were usually those with a probationary status, said that the people who asked for anonymity to speak frankly after orders to stop all the work of the desk, including speaking with reporters.
Being a probation means that the employee is in one trial periodOften a year or two, after starting a new government position, and does not reflect the performance, people said.
The move comes in the midst of a broader effort under President Donald Trump to shorten federal staff. The Office of Personnel Management asked federal agencies for lists of all recently hired employees because they are easiest to end, NBC News reported. That has imposed the fear of fired in places Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Environmental protection agency.
CFPB staff has been sharp since the end of last week, when agents from the Ministry of Government gained efficiency from Elon Musk access to the agency. The CFPB headquarters have since been closed, while employees were told by Actteren CFPB director Russell Vought not to do an office. Both Musk and Vought have called for the elimination of the CFPB.
The ends have sown more confusion in the desk, because several of those who are being fired had already accepted federal buyout offers, one of the people said.
Some were received form letters that do not contain their specific names and titles, but left a few fields full of generic temporary indications, this person said.
The endings met the enforcement division of the CFPB in particular because of a push under former director Rohit Chopra to stimulate hiring enforcement lawyers, another person said. The agency had around 1,700 employees before the jobs cuts.
The CFPB refused to comment.
