At Chanel’s ready-to-wear show in the fall of 1999, the set was sleek and open, with the models walking around an oval with 1999 printed in the center. There was a hint of the medieval – perhaps even survivalist – in the sheepskin and flat musketeer boots. Metal chain straps were tough; the amulets dangling from it seemed like protective talismans, which fit well with the ‘what-next’ mood of the time.
