Denver Zoo's new baby sloth named after Sloan's Lake

One of the youngest members of the Denver Zoo Conservation Alliance is now named after a beloved local landmark.

Hundreds of new and returning zoo members had the opportunity to vote on a name for the zoo’s baby sloth during Celebrate Colorado Week in late July and early August, spokesman Jake Kubié said.

The winning choice for female Linne’s two-toed sloth pup, born in April, was Sloan, after Sloan’s Lake.

“The name Sloan represents tranquility, interconnectedness and the breathtaking landscapes of Colorado. It is a tribute to the state’s natural beauty and the peaceful atmosphere of our newest addition to the sloth family,” zoo officials said in a statement.

More than 500 people who registered or renewed their membership participated in the voting process, with 230 voting for Sloan.

Other options included Harper, after famed National Park Service illustrator Charley Harper; and Isabel/Weminuche, after the Weminuche Wilderness and the San Isabel National Forest. According to zoo officials, there were 160 votes for Isabel/Weminuche and 118 for Harper.

Visitors can see Sloan and her mother, Charlotte, in their treetop habitat in the Tropical Discovery building.
