An Iowa man was taken into custody and charged with killing his ex-girlfriend’s mother Friday as she helped her daughter move out of his home.
Hamza Smajlovic, 24, was charged with murder, intimidation with a dangerous weapon and attempted murder in the fatal shooting of Ruth Sue Ann Robison, 45, according to criminal complaints obtained by JS. Robison’s 52-year-old husband, Tony Robison, was also seriously injured in the shooting.
According to the complaints, Smajlovic shot Robison and her husband in the head with a 9mm handgun. Authorities also said Smajlovic shot another person in the home, whose name has not been made public.
Officers from the Polk County Sheriff’s Office arrived on the scene in Des Moines on Friday around 5:21 p.m., where they discovered Robison and her husband suffering from gunshot wounds, according to a news release cited by The Des Moines Register. Robison died in a hospital. On Wednesday evening it was not yet clear whether her husband’s condition was still critical.
According to the registry, the sheriff’s office believes the shooting was a domestic situation between Smajlovic and his 24-year-old ex-girlfriend, Robison’s daughter. Robison’s daughter had just broken up with Smajlovic and was in the process of moving her belongings out of the house with her parents when the shooting occurred. KCCI reports this.
Court records reviewed by JS show that the judge ordered Smajlovic to have no contact with his ex-girlfriend. He is scheduled to appear in court on November 11 for a preliminary hearing.
