Four dozen sick and one death in outbreak linked to microdosing of edibles

More people are sick and one death is under investigation due to an outbreak of side effects linked to microdosing edibles.

The affected edibles – Diamond Shruumz brand cones, gummies and chocolate bars – sold by Prophet Premium Blends of Santa Ana, CA, have been recalled nationwide. They are sold online and in stores.

There are now 48 people confirmed with side effects, 27 of whom required hospital admission. One person has died. Less than a week ago the number of patients was 39. Several serious reactions have been reported, including respiratory failure.

Sick people have been confirmed in Alabama, Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma Pennsylvania , South Carolina, South Dakota and Tennessee.

Prophet Premium Blends recalled Diamond Shruumz Infused Cones, Chocolate Bars and Gummies (Micro- and Mega/Extreme-Dose) because they contain Muscimol, a chemical found in mushrooms.

The company declined to take action, but after negotiations with the Food and Drug Administration, it finally recalled the products last week.

Muscimol may be a possible cause of symptoms consistent with those observed in people who became ill after eating Diamond Shruumz products. In addition to respiratory failure, reported symptoms include seizures, agitation, involuntary muscle contractions, loss of consciousness, confusion, drowsiness, nausea and vomiting, abnormal heart rate and hyper/hypotension, according to the Food and Drug Administration recall. Prophet Premium Blends has halted production and distribution of the Diamond Shruumz product line while the FDA and Prophet Premium Blends continue their investigation into the cause of the serious side effects.
