Two top California politicians are in the crosshairs of recall petitions… but while one is gaining significant momentum, the other is struggling out of the starting blocks.
In the wake of the devastating wildfires that burned much of California, two petitions have been launched calling for the removal of the mayor of Los Angeles Karen Bass and Governor of California Gavin Newsom.
The petition to recall Governor Newsom is newer than the one against Bass… and frankly, it’s struggling to gain any serious traction. It started yesterday – and so far it has only attracted about 27,000 signatures.
That may seem like a lot… but to trigger a recall vote, a population equal to 12% of voters who cast ballots in the last gubernatorial election would have to sign — so the petition would have to win more than 1 vote. million votes to start a recall.
Considering Newsom has already survived the 2021 recall election, this seems unlikely… even as many criticize his leadership as the fires take their toll.
Bass, on the other hand, could be in trouble… because in order to force a recall vote for her office, 10% of registered voters in LA City would have to sign off — or about 200,000 people. To date, 108,000 people have signed.
So it looks like the petitions are halfway through the recall benchmark – although we can’t verify if every signer actually lives within the city limits… but it’s not surprising considering all the blame the public is putting on Bass
The Los Angeles Fire Chief Kristin Crowley has called out the Bass administration for not adequately funding the fire department. Bass glossed over Crowley’s comments during a press conference… stating they would speak privately further down the road.
Many people are frustrated by Bass’ response to the wildfires… including celebrities like Khloe Kardashian who straight called Bass a “joke.”

Other celebrities like Yvette Nicole Brown And Kym Whitley Are standing with the mayor …suggesting that race might be fueling some of the criticism.
The LA fires have burned more than 100,000 acres and killed at least 16 people so far… and they may cost Mayor Bass her job.
