Iron Man’s reign may be over, but that doesn’t mean we’ve seen the last of the Marvel franchise’s iconic mech suits.
Disney is producing a series based on the comic strip ‘Ironheart’, which follows the young genius Riri Williams. She was first introduced to the MCU in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
Ironheart will join the ever-growing list of Marvel Disney originals, including Agatha All Along and Daredevil: Born Again. Keep reading to learn more.
Ironheart release date
Marvel has confirmed that Ironheart will arrive 2025although we don’t have an exact release date yet. However, a filing with the US Copyright Office (via Wikipedia) lists the date as September 3, 2025.
Ironheart was originally scheduled for release in Fall 2023, making it part of Marvel’s Phase 5 lineup. However, the series was delayed due to a project reshuffle.
It is estimated that the series will have a total of six episodes.
Cast and crew of Ironheart
We have our Riri Williams – Dominique Thorne. Before Black Panther 2, Thorne had two critically acclaimed acting credits to her name: If Beale Street Could Talk and Judas And The Black Messiah.
In the Heights and Hamilton star Anthony Ramos plays Parker Robbins/The Hood, a supervillain from the comics. The trailer shown at D23 seems to indicate that he will be a bad influence on Riri.
This Is Us star Lyric Ross joins Ironheart. Although her role has not yet been confirmed, it is speculated that she will play Riri Williams’ best friend.
Deadline has reported that Sacha Baron Cohen has been tapped for the show, in which he plays mysterious characters. Fans seem to suspect that he is none other than Mephisto – a character that was strongly suspected to have originally made his debut in WandaVision.
Marvel hasn’t confirmed anything yet, but Cohen is said to have been spotted at Pinewood Studios for filming.
If you’re unfamiliar, Mephisto is Marvel’s version of the devil, who has numerous abilities such as projecting illusions, super strength, altering time, and manipulating people’s minds.
Alden Ehrenreich has also joined the cast in an untitled role. He is best known for his role as Han in Solo: A Star Wars Story. He confirmed this in a TikTok interview with Discussing Film. Regan Aliyah is also part of the show – she is best known for XO, Kitty.
Chinaka Hodge has been hired as head writer (Variety). Hodge previously worked on Amazing Stories and Snowpiercer. Black Panther series director Ryan Coogler is an executive producer.
What is Ironheart about?
Ironheart will introduce a newer character to Marvel comics, Riri Williams. Riri is a young genius who creates her own love suit reminiscent of what is seen on Tony Stark.
In the comics, she becomes a mentee of sorts to him after her suit catches his eye. Obviously, after the events of Avengers: Endgame, the MCU version of Riri Williams is a little different.
Riri was introduced to the world of superheroes through Shuri and Okoye in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever… albeit somewhat reluctantly at first.
She was brought to Wakanda’s side to fight Naymor and the Talokan, and built a suit made of vibranium in Shuri’s laboratory. However, she was not allowed to keep the suit because Wakanda was afraid it would fall into government or enemy hands.
Therefore, when Riri goes into Ironheart, she will have the knowledge and connections from her time in Wakanda, but she will still have to work on building a brand new suit.
In an interview with The Direct, Thorne stated that Wakanda Forever showed more of a stressed side of Riri, so we can expect to see her personality in full bloom: “I really hope people remember it, when they think about who they met and what they saw was that this was a girl under duress first and foremost.
When you think about everything you liked, everything you liked, or even didn’t like, remember that this was all a person who was stressed, she was fighting for her life. She had never seen blue people before.’
The first trailer was exclusive to D23 visitors, so we can’t share it here. Reports indicate that we see Riri feeling stuck during her internship abroad and has been expelled from MIT. She joins Parker Robbins/The Hood and begins taking on morally questionable activities, such as crashing in front of a truck in her suit.
It’s likely she’ll be a strong candidate for the Young Avengers, alongside Ms. Marvel.
Simply because it’s about superhero suits, we could see the upcoming Armor Wars movie tie into Ironheart in some way – which could mean a cameo from Don Cheadle.
