Mike Flanagan's 'Carrie' TV series in the works at Amazon

A series adaptation of Stephen King’s novel ‘Carrie’ from horror expert Mike Flanagan is in development at Amazon MGM Studios, Variety has learned.

The series’ logline describes it as a “bold and timely reinterpretation of the story of misfit high school student Carrie White, who has spent her life in seclusion with her domineering mother. After the sudden and untimely death of her father, Carrie must deal with the alien landscape of public high school, a bullying scandal that destroys her community, and the rise of mysterious telekinetic powers.

Flanagan will write and executive produce the potential series under his Intrepid Pictures banner, with Intrepid’s Trevor Macy also serving as executive producer. Melinda Nishioka will oversee the project for the company. Flanagan and Intrepid currently have an overall deal with Amazon MGM Studios.

Flanagan has become one of the most influential voices in the horror genre in recent years. He has received critical acclaim for his TV shows “The Haunting of Hill House,” “Midnight Mass” and “The Fall of the House of Usher” on Netflix, as well as films like “Doctor Sleep” (itself an adaptation of King’s sequel to ‘The Shining’) and ‘Gerald’s Game’, another film adaptation of the King book. Most recently, Flanagan adapted King’s 2020 novella “The Life of Chuck” into a film starring Tom Hiddleston.

Flanagan is repped by WME, Novo and VanderKloot Law.

“Carrie” was King’s first novel and was originally published in 1974. The book became a bestseller and was then made into a film in 1976 with Sissy Spacek in the title role. Directed by Brian DePalma, the film grossed over $30 million on a reported budget of less than $2 million. It is widely cited as one of the best horror films of all time. A sequel featuring none of the original cast titled “The Rage: Carrie 2” was released in 1999, followed by a TV movie remake in 2002 and another remake in 2013 starring Chloë Grace Moretz.
