Just a week after setting a new NWSL record for most goals scored in a single season, Temwa Chawinga set another record on Saturday. The Kansas City Current forward scored her 20th goal of the regular season at home against San Diego Wave FC, and the 54th-minute strike set a new precedent for scoring in NWSL. Chawinga is now the only player in the history of the competition to score against every active opponent in a single season.
No player in the history of the league has scored against every team in a single regular season. It’s just another record for Chawinga in an already spectacular season with Kansas City. The Current walked away with a 4-1 win against San Diego, eliminating the Wave from playoff contention and moving into second place in the standings. Kansas City has already qualified for the playoffs, but postseason seeding is still up for grabs with just one week left in the regular season.
Throughout the match, Chawinga was a frequent target for her teammates. Midfielders Vanessa DiBernardo and Michelle Cooper were often on the ball and looked for a short or long pass to the Malawian international. Cooper scored and forced an own goal, and later DiBernardo combined with Nichelle Prince in the penalty area for the record-setting moment with Chawinga.
As Prince carried the ball to the backline, she managed a cutting pass through the penalty area, and Chawinga managed to maintain her position and hold on to her run to score against a 13th different team this year.
