From coast to coast, Americans watched the results of a crucial election Tuesday marked the next president of the United States with a mix of excitement, elation, relief and resignation as the votes were counted.
The race pitted vice president Kamala Harris against former president Donald Trump.
Young and old joined the crowds in public spaces like New York City’s Times Square and college campuses, looking for communities of friends to share the night and the rollercoaster of emotions as votes were counted.
Others sought solitude or quieter spaces, like a darkened beach or the far end of a tavern, where the glow of portable devices or neon lights illuminated the results as they trickled in.
Some prayed. Some rejoiced.
And the world was watching too. From Taiwan to Jerusalem to India and beyond, many around the world waited for the outcome of an election and wondered how it would affect their lives in the coming days, months and years.
