Pundit Jamie Carragher shared his thoughts about Everton who received a penalty against Arsenal on Saturday in the Premier League. He believes it was not a penalty and VAR should have destroyed the referee’s decision.

The Gunners stood opposite Everton in Goodison Park on Saturday. Leandro Trossard opened the score for the visitors in the 34th minute. In the 48th minute, however, Myles Lewis-Skelly was supposed to have contaminated Jack Harrison in the box. Referee Darren England pointed to the spot and confirmed the decision.

In his press conference after the game, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta was convinced that it was not a penalty. Jamie Carragher agrees with the Spaniard, as he said Sky Sports (Via TBR Football):

“If it was a penalty, it was whole, very soft and I am with Mikel Arteta, I don’t think it was a penalty. When I saw it for the first time, I thought it was a penalty. I could understand the referee in some ways because it was a bit of a mess of a mess of Arsenal.

“So I can understand the referee it gives, but if you look at it, it really looked very soft and in some respects that decision or that kind of decisions is almost what is wrong with VAR. You look at it and you say, that’s not a penalty.”

Carragher also shared his thoughts about what VAR should have done and said:

“But it is not an absolute Howler and then VAR is not involved and really, it is simply not a penalty. And that is where I sometimes want VAR just to say, it is not about the referee making a terrible decision, it is not a punishment, you take that decision and you continue.”

Iliman Ndiaye converted the penalty in the 49th minute, and the game ended in a 1-1 draw, causing Arsenal’s hope for a Premier League title to dent further.

Liverpool is getting a step closer to the Premier League title when Arsenal Slips again

The Gunners came to the back of a 2-1 victory over Fulham at the back of the Everton collision on 1 April. While that match saw the return of Bukayo Saka due to injury, they lost Gabriel Magalhaes for the rest of the season because of a hamstring tear.

Anyway, Arsenal started well at Goodison Park and dominated the entire game. They had 71% possession and made 14 attempts on goal, with five on goal wounds. In the meantime, Everton had a total of five attempts with two on goal. However, it ended in a 1-1 draw.

The Gunners are in second place in the Premier League classification, 11 points behind Liverpool. However, the Reds can lead to 14 points if they beat Fulham in Craven Cottage on Sunday. With seven games after that, it will take a big collapse for the Merseysiders to miss the title.
