Large amounts of snow hit the high country as Eldora, Copper Mountain, Breckenridge and Winter Park were set to open

According to the National Weather Service, Colorado’s mountains will see several inches of fresh snow on Sunday as winds blow through the lower foothills and eastern plains.

The most snow is expected to fall in the Park Range mountains of northern Colorado, according to snow forecasts. Up to 20 centimeters of snow will fall on Mount Zirkel, the highest peak of the mountain range, on Sunday.

Other areas in the Rocky Mountains — including Cameron Pass between the Medicine Bow Range and the Never Summer Range, Muddy Pass along US 40 and Rabbit Ears Pass near Steamboat Springs — are expected to get between 3 and 6 inches of snow, according to forecasters.

Little to no snow is expected to accumulate in Colorado’s southern mountains, including the Sangre de Cristo Range and the San Juan Range, according to NWS forecasters.

According to one NWS Hazardous Weather ForecastsStrong and potentially damaging winds of up to 75 mph will be possible in the foothills and lower mountains on Sunday.

Forecasters say the biggest threat will be along and north of Interstate 70.

Wind gusts of 35 to 30 miles per hour will also be possible across the Plains Sunday afternoon, and winds near the Colorado-Wyoming border could reach 60 miles per hour, according to the weather warning.

Snow will fall in the mountains in the afternoon, but windy conditions could lead to blowing snow and whiteout conditions, especially along mountain passes, forecasters said.

Gusty winds will continue overnight and taper off by Monday, forecasters said in the forecast. A weak storm system will bring light snow to the mountains on Tuesday.
