Sentencing, originally set for Tuesday, November 26, has been postponed indefinitely with no new date scheduled.
Judge Juan Merchan announced the postponement in a letter Friday morning.
In May, Trump was convicted of 34 counts of falsifying business records to conceal a hush-money payment his former lawyer made to adult film actress Stormy Daniels — with the aim of covering up an alleged affair before the 2016 election.
Trump has consistently denied the charges, and the sentencing delay now gives his legal team time to argue that his felony convictions should be overturned in light of his election victory.
The MAGA leader’s 46-year-old son, Donald Trump Jr., shared his excitement about the announcement on X.
He wrote: “YUGE wins in Manhattan DA case. Sentencing canceled, judge also apparently asked to file papers to dismiss case. Another one bites the dust!!! LFG.”
Trump’s spokesman, Steven Cheung, also described the sentencing delay as a “decisive victory” for him.
Prosecutor Matthew Colangelo wrote in a letter to Judge Juan Merchan at the time: “The People agree that these are unprecedented circumstances and that the arguments presented by the defense in correspondence with the People on Friday should be carefully considered to ensure that any further action in this regard will appropriately balance the competing interests of (1) a jury verdict on guilt following a trial that has a presumption of regularity;
“Accordingly, the People respectfully request that the Court postpone the upcoming scheduled dates to allow the People time to assess these recent developments, and set November 19, 2024 as the deadline for the People to advise the Court of our views on appropriate steps .”
